Nurse Educator Clinical Nurse Specialist

1.      Masters in Nursing required.

2.      RN, licensed to practice in WA State; ACLS, PALS, ENPC, TNCC, CATN certified.

3.      Recent clinical experience in area of specialty, certification required (CEN).  Must be a clinical expert.

4.      Minimum of three years experience teaching adults. Experience providing and coordinating clinical education programs and staff development.

5.      Able to use word processing, graphic and database computer programs, email and scheduling software.

6.      Evidence of excellent communication and education skills.

7.      Able to communicate effectively in oral and written form in the English language.

8.      Able to function as a staff nurse in the Emergency Department.


1.      Experience in all areas of specialty preferred.

2.      Knowledge of adult learning principles and curriculum design.

3.      Experience in a nursing leadership role and staff consultation.

4.      Experience with CQI and standards development.

5.      Ability to communicate and work effectively with the physical and emotional

development of all ages served.

6.      Able to handle multiple demands and competing priorities.

7.      Experience with RN residencies desirable

8.      Ability to collaborate and work in a multidisciplinary team environment.

9.      Membership in a professional organization (ENA).



A.     Unique Job Functions


      Assess, plan, implement, evaluate and revise clinical education and learning in specialty field.  Work collaboratively with department members and Manager to orient and maintain the clinical competency of both licensed and non-licensed staff.
      Assists the Manager in evaluating the clinical competency of both licensed and non-licensed staff.
      Provide clinical consultation for complex patients to the staff.
      Provide evidence based research to assist with implementation of practice changes.
      Provides and assists in providing continuity of care for the patients and families in the area of specialty.
            May provide consultation and education to families and staff
            Initiate and/or participate in research projects and implement findings

      Assist with development and implementation of educational action plans.
      Develop and conduct residency programs to meet labor needs, as indicated.
      Collaborate with ER manager to facilitate learning experiences for staff.
      Develop educational offerings with possibility for CE development and revenue generation.
      Develop operational budget and cost-benefit analyses for clinical training proposals, in conjunction with the Manager.
      Demonstrates continuing clinical competence in area of specialty through certification maintenance, continuing education, and performance of clinical skills
      Participate in quality management activities.
      Ensure that educational activities are congruent with the hospital’s Mission, Vision, Values and Goals.
      Serve on appropriate committees and advisory boards at hospital and in community.


B.    Clinical Specialist Addendum:


      Emergency certifications; TNCC, ENPC, PALS, ACLS, CATN, CEN.
      Instructor/trainer certification in area of specialty preferred.
      Provides advanced clinical practice and care planning in area of specialty to select patients.
      Collaborates with physician colleagues on select patients and patient populations.
      Provides leadership for development of evidence based policies, procedures and protocols.
      An expert in the theory and practice of their area of specialty.
